Original Item: Only One Available. THEOPHILUS RICHARDS worked in London worked from 1790 until 1830 and maintained a shop in Birmingham also. Known for his high quality and great quality, Richards enjoyed many British Government and Military Contracts. 

This fine example of his work is not fitted with a butt cap, and is all brass fitted, with a nice escutcheon on the wrist. All of the fittings have simple engraving, including an acorn on the end of the trigger guard, which has a rose on the “guard portion. The .59” bore half- octagonal barrel measures 6 1/2", with the pistol being 12" in overall length.

This was designed to be ideal as an "Overcoat" pistol, easily fitting in the large side pockets that were fashionable in both Military and Civilian Overcoats of the Napoleonic era of 1790 -1815. This time period also included the French Revolution, which caused thousands of deaths, and the Napoleonic Wars, which lasted to 1815 as one of history's most deadly wars. In the Cities carrying concealed weapons became essential to combat Foot Pads, Ruffians and Criminals that cruised the streets looking for victims.

This Flintlock pistol retains its original wooden ram rod that has a screw-shaped “ball extractor” on its rear end. The Richards marked lock has some minimal engraving and functions correctly, holding at half cock and firing at full. The barrel is marked with the correct London CROWN / P proof and CROWN/ V viewed marks.
